Mounjaro Hair Loss: Why It Happens and What to Eat
Noticed more hair in the shower since starting Mounjaro? Here’s why shedding happens, when it usually stops, the protein and iron basics worth getting right, and when to see your GP.

In this guide
You’re a few months into Mounjaro. The scales are moving, your jeans are looser, and then one morning there’s a little nest of hair in the shower drain. And on your hairbrush. And on your jumper. Sound familiar?
First, take a breath. You’re not imagining it, you’re not alone, and in most cases this kind of shedding is temporary. Let’s look at why it happens, when it usually settles, and the simple food basics worth getting right while your appetite is on mute.
Is hair loss a side effect of Mounjaro?
Yes, it’s listed. The Mounjaro patient leaflet includes “hair loss observed in patients treated for weight management” as a common side effect, which means it may affect up to 1 in 10 people. The Wegovy patient leaflet lists hair loss as common too, noting it may happen more often at the 7.2mg dose. Ozempic contains the same medicine as Wegovy (semaglutide), which is why so many people search for both.
So if you’ve noticed thinning, it’s a known, written-down thing. Not vanity. Not in your head.
Why does it happen?
The leaflets don’t spell out the cause, but the likeliest explanation is something called telogen effluvium. That’s the medical name for a type of temporary shedding that shows up after the body goes through a big change. The NHS lists weight loss, stress, illness and iron deficiency among the causes of temporary hair loss. A medical review of telogen effluvium names crash dieting, low protein intake and iron deficiency as possible triggers. And the NHS page on iron deficiency anaemia lists hair loss (“you notice more hair coming out when brushing or washing it”) among its less common symptoms.
Now think about life on a GLP-1. You’re losing weight faster than you might on your own. You’re barely hungry. Some days lunch is three crackers and half a yoghurt. That’s a lot of change for your body to process, and hair is often one of the places it shows.
Mounjaro hair loss: when does it stop?
Here’s the bit that confuses everyone: the shedding usually starts a while after the change, not during it. According to the review, the trigger typically happens around three months before shedding begins (anywhere from one to six months), and in acute telogen effluvium the shedding lasts less than six months.
A big shift, such as rapid weight loss, eating far less, illness or stress.
The typical gap is about three months, but it can be anywhere from one to six.
Acute telogen effluvium is described as self-limiting, meaning it tends to sort itself out.
New growth can take up to around six months to begin, and a little longer before you notice it in the mirror.
Timeline based on the StatPearls review of telogen effluvium.
The NHS is reassuring here too: hair loss caused by a medical condition “usually stops or grows back once you’ve recovered.” Patience is annoying, we know. But it’s usually on your side.
What to eat when you’re barely hungry
No food is a hair treatment, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. But when your appetite is tiny, it’s easy for the basics to slip, and protein and iron are the two that come up again and again. So how do you get enough of them when a full plate feels like a mountain?
What to look at while you’re on a GLP-1
| What to look at | Why | Easy way to cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Low protein intake is named as a possible trigger of telogen effluvium. Protein also contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass. | A tablespoon of Pure Beef Bone Broth Powder: 9.6g protein, stirred into coffee, soup or a smoothie. |
| Iron | The NHS lists iron deficiency as a cause of temporary hair loss. Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. | Meat, pulses, dark-green leafy veg and fortified cereals. If your GP agrees, Iron Bisglycinate + Vit C: 20mg iron and 100mg vitamin C per capsule. |
| Eating little and often | Crash dieting is named as a possible trigger. A tiny appetite can turn into accidental crash dieting. | A warm mug of broth between small meals. Half a tablespoon makes half a mug if a full one feels like too much. |
| Getting checked | A blood test can show whether your iron is low, rather than guessing. | Ask your GP about a blood test that includes ferritin (your iron stores). |
Why Pure Beef works when you can’t face food
On a GLP-1, volume is the enemy. A big shake or a chicken breast can feel like too much. Pure Beef is 96% protein by weight, so one tablespoon gives you 9.6g of protein. It’s neutral-tasting, with no added salt, no sweeteners and no fillers, so it disappears into things you’re already having: your morning coffee (try The Broffee), a soup, a sauce, even a smoothie.
Regular protein shakes ask you to drink a whole extra glass of something thick and sweet. Pure Beef doesn’t ask you to find room for anything. It just quietly turns the coffee you were drinking anyway into a protein coffee. That’s the kind of help you need when your appetite has packed its bags.
Not sure how much protein you should be aiming for? Our guide to how much protein you need walks you through it, and your prescriber, GP or dietitian can tell you what’s right for you while you’re on your medication.
When to see your GP
The NHS says to see a GP if you’re worried about your hair loss, and to tell them if it’s affecting your wellbeing. It’s also worth booking in if:
- you notice bald patches rather than all-over thinning
- the shedding is heavy, or still going after six months
- you have other symptoms, such as feeling unusually tired, short of breath or noticing your heart pounding
- you’re finding it hard to eat or drink enough on your medication
Your GP may suggest a blood test. The review recommends checking iron levels, including ferritin, and testing your thyroid if you have symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Please don’t change or stop your medication on your own: your prescriber is the person to talk to about side effects.
Questions people ask
Does hair loss from Mounjaro grow back?
If it’s telogen effluvium, it usually does. It’s described as self-limiting, and regrowth tends to follow over the months after shedding settles. Speak to your GP if it isn’t improving.
When does Mounjaro hair loss stop?
Shedding from telogen effluvium usually lasts less than six months. Because it tends to start around three months after the trigger, many people notice it a few months into treatment.
Can you get hair loss after stopping Mounjaro?
Shedding lags behind the change that caused it, so it can appear or carry on for a little while after stopping. If you’re concerned, your GP or prescriber can help.
Is Mounjaro hair loss worse for women?
The leaflet doesn’t split it by sex. Temporary shedding can affect anyone. Female pattern hair loss is a different, permanent type, so see your GP if you’re unsure which you’re dealing with.
What is the best supplement for Mounjaro hair loss?
No supplement is proven to stop it. If a blood test shows your iron is low, your GP may recommend iron. Otherwise, focus on getting enough protein and eating regularly, even in small amounts.
Can you prevent hair loss on Mounjaro?
There’s no guaranteed way. Avoiding accidental crash dieting, getting enough protein and keeping an eye on your iron are sensible basics, and your prescriber or dietitian can help you plan meals that work with a smaller appetite.
Does Wegovy or Ozempic cause hair loss too?
The Wegovy leaflet lists hair loss as a common side effect, which may happen more often at the 7.2mg dose. Ozempic contains the same medicine, semaglutide.
Our pick

Want to cover iron too? Iron Bisglycinate + Vit C gives you 20mg of iron and 100mg of vitamin C in each capsule.
